Let me ask you an interesting question:-What make you choose to become a doctor?
Ambitious to save a lot of human life ? Family expectation? Good study result? Stable job with dedicated income? High social status? Or dramatic life?
If you do not have a great determination to become a doctor, you might get yourself into troubles when you started houseman-ship. Reality is cruel, working as a doctor is crueler.
Recently what had happened made me worry about the new generation of house officers...
Quite a few house officers cannot adapt and cope with the stressful working environment.
Hence, i would like to give a Wake up call for those who going to start houseman-ship...
1) If you never work or born with golden spoon in your mouth, please get yourself a job and try to adapt working life instead of spending your 1 whole year for nothing or relax at home/foreign country.
2) If you have no interest in medical field, or you cannot find satisfaction in it. You should hypnotize your mind and soul, to bear with two year of houseman-ship training. Or you can think of any other alternative path for your future...
3) If you unable to tolerate scolding from your superior, or tolerate "tough training" bullies from senior, or tolerate gossip or even forced to do ppk job /nurse job/ cleaner job ...
You better mentally prepared yourself
4) If you think people will appreciate what you did. Kids...lots things are taken for granted.
Becoming a doctor is no longer a proud job anymore...if you still live in fantasy drama/tv shows, please wake up!!
-basically, house officer is the lowest rank in a hospital. (this is a norm! please don't complaint it)
Same goes to...if you newly enter a company, and you are just day 1 of life, i believe you wont get any respect even from the cleaner who might work at that company for few years.
-if you want people's respect, you should earned it.
-HO are doing some part of PPK /nurse/ cleaner job. We had been used to it. Sending emergency blood/ running packed cell to OT etc all done by house officers
-if the dressing soaked and nurses are busy, you should help to change
-if the bed sheet is dirty and you care, you will help to change
Every jobs have their challenges, difficulties and responsibility.
No single job is superior than the others.
Doctors deal with human beings and human life.
For 1 ETDA tube of blood, we might have poke patients few times, and faced those unhappy or angry expression
For single patient who become desaturated, how stressful we need to resuscitate them
For single patient who passed away, can you imagined we need to cope with family's grief /emotion
For single patient asystole, CPR 30minutes on human body is never same as those korean drama
Still, no single job is superior than the others.
Please do not compare our jobs with yours specially for those engineers who deal with robots/ for those chemical assistants deal with test tube. (Few videos in facebook showed that we doctors do not deserve critical allowance)
I am sure i am not able to work as engineer or chemical assistant. I respect you. Please do give me your respect. If you not supportive, please do not be destructive.
Anyhow the critical allowance currently remained !! happy for everyone!
Lastly, if you having a lots of stress/ troubles, please find someone to ventilate such as family members/ friends/ seniors. Don't kept it yourself. It will be a disaster when it burst!
There is always hope at the end of rainbow. The best is yet to come.
If anything, feel free to email me.
Thank you Dr for the kind words of advice! I'll be joining HSI soon, and will keep your advice to heart. Thank you, stay safe stay healthy.
