Part 2 surgical....

Some people will ask, is it possible for me to choose medical as 1st posting / surgical as 1st posting? Answer is difficult (in HSIJB). This was due to the number of house officers were differ from time to time. You will be assigned to the department which lack of houseman. If everyone was allowed to choose their favorite posting, then that department will be in chaos.

Turn to surgical department...it was sad to tell that we don't have neurosurgical department here. Hence, lots of traumatic brain injury cases need to be referred to HSAJB if operable. However, we had good breast and endocrine surgeons and Burn unit center. You will be having lots of opportunity to assist / observe the surgical procedure.

As a house-officer in surgical posting , you are allowed to perform various kind of procedure such as CVL insertion, chest tube insertion, excision biopsy or even appendectomy. I was so excited and feeling accomplished when you were allowed to perform all those procedure. If you enter surgical posting as a high poster (4th -6th), i believe you can perform more procedure as you were likely to gain more trust from your superior.
Tagging period here was 2weeks for 1st to 3rd poster. 10days for 4th to 6th poster.

In addition, specialist here were SUPER nice. I like them alot esp Mr M and Miss D. They like to teach and you can learn from them.
Not to forget Dr H (a nice, skillful MO)- whom i hope i can learn surgical skills from him 1 day- Please wait for me to float there.

From the bad side...recently the new generation were very lazy. Specialist come before them. They never do ward round, slacking etc. They will scold you rather than guide you. They will hand over their responsibilities to house officer, and if anything goes wrong, the HO will be blamed. Sometimes, they might teach you the wrong things. Why hierarchy become so prominent here? I do not know... Plenty of people like to join surgical department (MO) here as it was relax, chills, lack responsibility.

Anyhow, the current situation made me felt so sad and disappointed.
I am so sorry, i didnt mean want to scare anyone. I just told the reality /fact.
One advice, do your best, and cover your ass too.
